…which is for housing;
and governing (al-siyāsa), which is for bringing people together, gathering them, and helping one another in the means of living, and keeping these in order.
The second: what prepares for each one of these crafts and serves it, like smithing, which serves farming and a number of crafts by making their tools; and like carding and spinning, which serve weaving by preparing its material.
The third: what completes the roots and adorns them, like milling and baking for farming, and like washing and whitening cloth (qiṣāra) and tailoring for weaving.
And that, in relation to keeping the earthly world standing, is like the parts of a person in relation to the whole of him. For they too are of three kinds: either roots, like the heart, the liver and the brain; or servants of these, like the stomach, the vessels, the arteries, the nerves and the veins; or completing and adorning them, like the nails, the fingers and the eyebrows.
The noblest of these crafts are their roots, and the noblest of their roots is governing, by bringing together and setting right. That is why this craft demands, of the one who takes it on, a perfection that the other crafts do not demand; and that is why the master of this craft inevitably puts all the other craftsmen to work.
And governing, in setting people right and guiding them to the straight road that saves in this world and the Hereafter, is of four ranks. The first, and it is the highest: the governing of the prophets, upon them be peace; their rule is over the elite and the common people alike, in their outward and their inward.
The second: the caliphs, kings and sultans; their rule is over the elite and the common people alike, but over their outward, not their inward.
The third: the scholars of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and of His religion, who are the heirs of the prophets; their rule is over the inward of the elite only. The understanding of the common people does not rise to benefiting from them, and their power does not reach to disposing of people's outward affairs by obliging, forbidding and laying down the law.
The fourth: the preachers (al-wuʿʿāẓ); their rule is over the inward of the common people only.
So the noblest of these four crafts, after prophethood, is passing on knowledge, refining people's souls away from blameworthy, ruinous traits of character, and guiding them to praiseworthy traits that bring happiness; and that is what is meant by teaching.
And we said that this is more excellent than all the other crafts and trades only because the nobility of crafts is known by three things: either by looking to the faculty by which one reaches knowledge of them, as with the excellence of the rational [sciences] over the linguistic ones, since wisdom is grasped by the intellect and language by hearing, and the intellect is nobler than hearing; or by looking to how widely they benefit, as with the excellence of farming over goldsmithing; or by considering the material that is worked on, as with the excellence of goldsmithing over tanning, since the material of the one is gold and of the other the skin of dead animals.
And it is not hidden that the religious sciences, which are understanding (fiqh) of the road to the Hereafter, are grasped only by perfection of the intellect and clarity of intelligence; and the intellect is the noblest quality of a human being, as will be explained, since by it Allah's trust (amāna) is accepted, and by it one reaches the nearness of Allah, Glorified is He.
As for how widely it benefits, there is no doubt about it, for its benefit and its fruit is the happiness of the Hereafter.
As for the nobility of the material, how could it be hidden? The teacher works on the hearts and souls of human beings. The noblest being on earth is the human kind, and the noblest part of a human being's substance is his heart; and the teacher is busy perfecting it, polishing it, purifying it and leading it to nearness to Allah, Mighty and Majestic.
So teaching knowledge is, in one respect, worship of Allah, Exalted is He, and in another respect a standing-in (khilāfa) for Allah, Exalted is He; and it is among the greatest ways of standing in for Allah. For Allah, Exalted is He, has opened to the heart of the scholar knowledge, which is the most particular of His attributes, so he is like the keeper of His most precious treasuries; and then he is given leave to spend from it on everyone who needs it. So what rank is greater than that of a servant who is a link between his Lord, Glorified is He, and His creation, bringing them near to Allah and leading them to the Garden of Refuge (jannat al-maʾwā)?
May Allah make us among them, by His generosity; and may Allah bless every chosen servant.
Chapter Two: on praiseworthy and blameworthy knowledge, their divisions and their rulings
In it: an explanation of what is an individual obligation and what is a communal obligation; an explanation of where theology (kalām) and law (fiqh) stand within the knowledge of the religion, and how far; and the preference for the knowledge of the Hereafter.
