The proofs from reason: why knowledge is excellent in itself

After the Quran, the hadith and the sayings, Ghazali argues from reason. First he defines excellence: having more of what makes a thing perfect, as a horse excels a donkey. Speed is an excellence only in a horse, but knowledge is an excellence in itself, which is why it describes Allah and honours the angels and the prophets. Things are wanted for something else (money), for themselves (the happiness of the Hereafter and seeing Allah), or for both (health); knowledge is wanted for both, and it is the root of happiness in this world and the next. So teaching and learning are the best of works, because the world itself runs on people's work, which he now begins to divide.

On the proofs from reason (al-shawāhid al-ʿaqliyya)

¶ 2

Know that what is sought in this chapter is knowing (maʿrifa) the excellence (faḍīla) of knowledge and its preciousness. And as long as excellence itself is not understood, and what is meant by it is not made sure, it cannot be known whether it exists as a quality of knowledge or of any other trait. Whoever hopes to know whether Zayd is wise or not, while he has not yet understood the meaning of wisdom and its reality, has strayed from the road.

¶ 3

Excellence (al-faḍīla) is taken from al-faḍl, which is increase. When two things share in some matter and one of them has something more, it is said: it has excelled it, and it has the excellence over it, whenever its increase is in what is the perfection of that thing. As it is said: the horse is more excellent than the donkey, meaning that it shares with it in the strength to carry loads and exceeds it in the strength to charge and wheel away, speed of running and beauty of form. Were a donkey supposed to have a growth (silʿa) besides, it would not be called more excellent, because that is an increase in the body and a lack in meaning, and no part of perfection at all. An animal is sought for its meaning and its qualities, not for its body.

Once you have understood this, it will not be hidden from you that knowledge is an excellence if you take it in relation to the other qualities, just as the horse has an excellence if you take it in relation to the other animals. But speed of running is an excellence in the horse, not an excellence absolutely, while knowledge is an excellence in itself and absolutely, without relation to anything. For it is a quality of the perfection of Allah, Glorified is He, and by it the angels and the prophets are honoured. Indeed, the clever among horses is better than the dull: so it is an excellence absolutely, without relation to anything.

¶ 4

And know that the precious thing that is desired divides into what is sought for something else, what is sought for itself, and what is sought both for something else and for itself. What is sought for itself is nobler and more excellent than what is sought for something else. What is sought for something else is dirhams and dinars, for they are two stones with no use in them; were it not that Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, made the meeting of needs easy by them, they and pebbles would be the same.

¶ 5

And what is sought for itself is happiness (al-saʿāda) in the Hereafter, and the delight of looking (al-naẓar) at the Face of Allah, Exalted is He.

¶ 6

And what is sought both for itself and for something else is like the soundness of the body. The soundness of the foot, for example, is sought in that it is the body's freedom from pain, and it is sought for walking on it and reaching one's aims and needs.

In this respect, if you look at knowledge, you will see it is delightful in itself, and so sought for itself; and you will find it a means to the abode of the Hereafter and its happiness, and a way to nearness to Allah, Exalted is He, which is not reached except by it.

And the greatest of things in rank, for a human being, is everlasting happiness, and the most excellent of things is what is a means to it; and it is not reached except by knowledge and action, and action is not reached except by knowing how to act. So the root of happiness in this world and the Hereafter is knowledge, and it is, then, the most excellent of works. And how could it not be, when the excellence of a thing is also known by the nobility of its fruit? And you have learned that the fruit of knowledge is nearness to the Lord of the worlds, joining the horizon of the angels, and the company of the highest assembly (al-malaʾ al-aʿlā).

¶ 7

That is in the Hereafter. As for this world: honour and dignity, authority over kings, and respect fixed in people's natures; so much so that the dull among the Turks and the coarse among the Arabs find their natures moulded to revere their elders (shuyūkh), because these have more knowledge, gained from experience. Indeed, the beast by its nature reveres the human being, because it senses that the human being is set apart by a perfection beyond its own rank.

This is the excellence of knowledge in general. Then the sciences differ, as will be explained, and their excellences inevitably vary as they vary.

¶ 8

As for the excellence of teaching and learning, it is plain from what we have mentioned. For if knowledge is the most excellent of things, learning it is seeking the most excellent, and teaching it is giving the most excellent.

The explanation of this is that people's aims are gathered in religion and the world, and there is no order for religion without the order of the world. For the world is the field of the Hereafter: it is the instrument that leads to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, for whoever takes it as an instrument, and a lodging for whoever takes it as a settled home and homeland. And the affairs of the world are not set in order except by the works of human beings.

¶ 9

And their works, crafts and trades come down to three kinds.

¶ 10

The first of them: roots without which the world cannot stand, and they are four: farming, which is for food;

¶ 11

and weaving, which is for clothing;

¶ 12

and building… (The list goes on over the page.)

Vowelled, as we read it: (Our analysis. Forms checked against the Quranic Arabic Corpus, Tanzil and Lane.)

Word Root What it does Meaning
فَـ (a particle) "so": draws the conclusion of the argument so, therefore
أَصْلُ أ ص ل the subject; joined to the next word, so it has no ال and no -un the root of; as in أَصْلُهَا ثَابِتٌ, "whose root is firmly fixed" (14:24, Saheeh International)
السَّعَادَةِ س ع د completes أصل, so it ends in -i happiness (key term)
فِي (a particle) "in" in
الدُّنْيَا د ن و (our card) governed by في; its ending does not show the change this world
وَالآخِرَةِ أ خ ر (our card) joined to الدنيا by وَ, so it ends in -i too and the Hereafter; as in فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْءَاخِرَةِ (2:220)
هُوَ (a pronoun) stands between the subject and what is said about it, and stresses it it (and nothing else)
العِلْمُ ع ل م (our card) what is said about the subject knowledge

How it works. Again no verb: "so the root of happiness in this world and the Hereafter [is] knowledge". Two things are new. The subject is a long phrase, «أصل السعادة في الدنيا والآخرة». And «هو», "it", stands between the subject and what is said about it, to make it emphatic: knowledge, and nothing else, is the root. The Quran builds the same way: «وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ», "and it is those who are the successful" (2:5, Saheeh International). Urdu gets the stress with
