Arabic root · met on p 8

أ خ رafter, last

الآخرة · al-ākhira · the Hereafter

  • Met in: V1 p8 ¶4a: «وفي الآخرة هي الجنة», "and in the Hereafter it is Paradise". Already on V1 p5 ¶11: «أن الآخرة خير من الدنيا».
  • Dictionary form: ٱلْـَٔاخِرَة, the feminine of آخِر, "last" (corpus lemma آخِر, 155 times in the Quran), as in «وَبِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ هُمْ يُوقِنُونَ» (2:4).
  • Pattern: فَاعِلَة (fāʿila), the feminine of فَاعِل. It stands for الدار الآخرة, "the last abode", as in 29:64 below; its pair is الدنيا, "this world".
  • Meaning here: The life after death: the world to come, which the whole Ihya is about reaching.

Ibn Faris, Maqāyīs al-Lugha, root أخر, vol 1, p 69

الهمزة والخاء والراء أصل واحد إليه ترجع فروعه، وهو خلاف التقدم

One origin to which its branches go back: the opposite of coming first. (So ākhir is what comes last.)

Urdu bridge

وَمَا هَٰذِهِ ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَآ إِلَّا لَهْوٌ وَلَعِبٌ وَإِنَّ ٱلدَّارَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ لَهِىَ ٱلْحَيَوَانُ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ يَعْلَمُونَ

And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.

Surah Al-Ankaboot (29), ayah 64 · Saheeh International

Why this ayah: «وَإِنَّ ٱلدَّارَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ لَهِىَ ٱلْحَيَوَانُ», "the home of the Hereafter: that is the [eternal] life": the full phrase behind the word, and the thought of V1 p8 ¶1a: people are asleep, and wake when they die.

In the Ihya
