The scholar, the worshipper and the martyr

Book 1 · Knowledge

Before you read

Explain, at the bottom of the screen, opens help for the passage you are reading.

More hadith in praise of knowledge, one after another. The death of a tribe is lighter than the death of one scholar; the scholars' ink is weighed against the martyrs' blood; the scholar is above the worshipper as the full moon is above the stars. Ghazali stops twice to draw the lesson: knowledge ranks right after prophethood, and above martyrdom.

And he ﷺ said: "Truly, the death of a tribe is lighter than the death of a scholar (ʿālim)."2

And he ﷺ said: "People are mines, like the mines of gold and silver: the best of them in the Age of Ignorance (al-jāhiliyya) are the best of them in Islam, if they understand (faqihū)."3

And he ﷺ said: "On the Day of Resurrection the ink (midād) of the scholars will be weighed against the blood of the martyrs (shuhadāʾ)."4

And he ﷺ said: "Whoever preserves for my community (umma) forty hadith of the Sunna (al-sunna), until he passes them on to them, I will be for him an intercessor and a witness on the Day of Resurrection."5

And he ﷺ said: "Whoever of my community carries forty hadith will meet Allah, Mighty and Majestic, on the Day of Resurrection as one who understands (faqīh) and knows (ʿālim)."6

And he ﷺ said: "Whoever gains understanding (tafaqqaha) in the religion of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, Allah, Exalted is He, will suffice him in what worries him, and provide for him from where he does not expect."7

And he ﷺ said: "Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed to Ibrāhīm, upon him be peace: O Ibrāhīm, I am All-Knowing (ʿalīm); I love every knowing one (ʿalīm)."8

And he ﷺ said: "The scholar is the trustee (amīn) of Allah, glorified is He, on the earth."9

And he ﷺ said: "Two kinds of my community: when they are sound, the people are sound, and when they are corrupt, the people are corrupt: the rulers (umarāʾ) and the jurists (fuqahāʾ)."10

And he ﷺ said: "When a day comes upon me in which I do not increase in knowledge that brings me nearer to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, then may I not be blessed in the rising of that day's sun."11

And he ﷺ said, preferring knowledge over worship and martyrdom (shahāda): "The excellence of the scholar over the worshipper (ʿābid) is like my excellence over the lowest man among my Companions."12

So look how he made knowledge a companion to the degree of prophethood, and how he lowered the rank of action stripped of knowledge; even though the worshipper is not without knowledge of the worship he keeps up, and without it, it would not be worship.

And he ﷺ said: "The excellence of the scholar over the worshipper is like the excellence of the moon on the night it is full over all the other stars."13

And he ﷺ said: "Three will intercede on the Day of Resurrection: the prophets, then the scholars, then the martyrs."14

So how great is a rank that comes right after prophethood and above martyrdom, with all that has come down on the excellence of martyrdom!

¶ 3

And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Allah, Exalted is He, has not been worshipped with anything better than understanding (fiqh) in the religion; and one person of understanding (faqīh) is harder on Satan than a thousand worshippers. Everything has a pillar, and the pillar of this religion is understanding."15

And he ﷺ said: "The best of your religion is the easiest of it, and the best of worship is understanding (al-fiqh)."16

And he ﷺ said: "The excellence of the believer who is a scholar over… (The hadith continues on the next page.)

Quran on this page1 ayah

¶2f «ورزقه من حيث لا يحتسب», "and provide for him from where he does not expect": the Quran's words inside a hadith, not quoted as an ayah.

And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.

Recorded by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Awsaṭ, Abū Bakr al-Ājurrī in Faḍl al-ʿIlm and Abū Nuʿaym in Riyāḍat al-Mutaʿallimīn, from Abū Hurayra (RA), with a weak chain. Al-Tirmidhī and Ibn Mājah have only «فقيه أشد على الشيطان من ألف عابد», from Ibn ʿAbbās (RA), with a weak chain.

    In the nine books:

only the words «فقيه أشد على الشيطان من ألف عابد». Jami al-Tirmidhi 2681: "The Faqih is harder on Ash-Shaitan than a thousand worshipers." Sunan Ibn Majah 222: "One Faqih (knowledgeable man) is more formidable against the Shaitan than one thousand devoted worshippers." Both from Ibn ʿAbbās. The rest of the hadith is not in the nine books.

  16. 16

Recorded by Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr from Anas (RA), with a weak chain. The first half is in Aḥmad, from Miḥjan ibn al-Adraʿ (RA), with a good chain (isnād jayyid); the second half in al-Ṭabarānī, from Ibn ʿUmar (RA), with a weak chain.

    In the nine books:

not in them; al-ʿIrāqī names where it is recorded (above). Our copy of Aḥmad's Musnad holds only part of it, so this proves nothing about Aḥmad (see Open questions).

Words of the day2 words
  • العابد (al-ʿābid), the worshipper: ain-ba-dal
  • الشهداء (al-shuhadāʾ), the martyrs: shin-haa-dal
Open questions
  • Note 2 ends «وأصل الحديث عند أبي الدرداء», "and the root of the hadith is with Abū al-Dardāʾ". The printed edition reads the same (checked on the scan). It names the same Companion as the report itself, so as it stands it adds nothing; it may be a copyist's slip for another name. We cannot settle it.
  • Note 13: al-ʿIrāqī names al-Nasāʾī among those who record the "full moon" hadith; our copy of al-Nasāʾī did not show it on our search.
  • Note 16: al-ʿIrāqī places the first half, «خير دينكم أيسره», in Aḥmad from Miḥjan ibn al-Adraʿ with a good chain. Our copy of Aḥmad's Musnad holds only part of it, so we could not check.
