  • Met in: V1 p8 ¶1a: «فإذا حط الموت عنه أعباء الدنيا», "then, when death lifts the burdens of the world off him"; and V1 p8 ¶5a: «هلاك بدنه بالموت», "the ruin of his body by death".
  • Dictionary form: مَوْت. Lane: "Death; lifelessness; contr. of حَيَاة".
  • Pattern: فَعْل (faʿl), a verbal noun of مَاتَ, "he died" (corpus lemma, 39 times in the Quran). The dead person is مَيِّت (38 times).
  • Meaning here: Death, which in Ghazali's picture is a waking up: it lifts the world's numbness, and a person feels at last what his heart has lost (V1 p8 ¶1a).

الميم والواو والتاء أصل صحيح يدل على ذهاب القوة من الشيء. منه الموت: خلاف الحياة

One sound origin: the going of strength out of a thing. From it, death: the opposite of life.

كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَآئِقَةُ ٱلْمَوْتِ وَإِنَّمَا تُوَفَّوْنَ أُجُورَكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ فَمَن زُحْزِحَ عَنِ ٱلنَّارِ وَأُدْخِلَ ٱلْجَنَّةَ فَقَدْ فَازَ وَمَا ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَآ إِلَّا مَتَٰعُ ٱلْغُرُورِ

Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.
