(…and the rejection, from the ranks of the heedless deniers.) What you persist in has untied the knot of silence from my tongue, and has hung around my neck the duty to speak, like a necklace of speech. You persist in blindness to the plain truth, with stubbornness in supporting falsehood, making ignorance look good, and stirring up trouble against anyone who chooses to step a little away from people's customs, and turns slightly away from clinging to empty formality toward acting on what knowledge requires. He does this hoping to reach what Allah has asked him to worship Him by: purifying the self (tazkiyat al-nafs) and setting the heart right (iṣlāḥ al-qalb). He wants to make up for some of the life he has wasted [yāʾisan ʿan tamām ḥājatika fī al-ḥayra: see Open questions], and to separate himself from the crowd of those about whom the bringer of the Sacred Law ﷺ said: "The people most severely punished on the Day of Resurrection will be a scholar whom Allah, glorified is He, did not benefit through his knowledge."1 (Our translation of Ghazali's wording.)

By my life, there is no cause for your insistence on arrogance except the disease that has spread through the great multitude, and has indeed overtaken the masses: failing to see the summit of this matter, and not knowing that the matter is grave and the affair serious. The Hereafter is coming toward us and this world is turning its back. The appointed time is near, the journey is long, the provision is thin, the danger is great, and the road is blocked. Whatever knowledge or action is not purely for the sake of Allah is rejected by the discerning assayer who sees clearly. And travelling the road to the Hereafter, with its many hidden dangers, without a guide or a companion, is exhausting and wearing.

The guides on this road are the scholars, who are the heirs of the prophets. But this age has become empty of them, and only people who keep up the outward form (al-mutarassimūn) remain. Satan has taken hold of most of them, and rebellion has led them astray. Each one has become infatuated with his immediate share, so that he sees the good as bad and the bad as good. So the knowledge of the religion has been worn away, and the lighthouse of guidance has been blotted out across the regions of the earth.

They have made people imagine that there is no knowledge except three things: a legal ruling for government, which judges use to settle disputes when the rabble quarrel; debate, which the one who wants to show off wears like armour to defeat and silence others; and ornamented rhyming speech, which the preacher uses to lure the common people. For they saw nothing besides these three that could serve as a trap for the unlawful and a net for worldly scraps.

¶ 2

As for the knowledge of the road to the Hereafter, the way the righteous early generations (al-salaf al-ṣāliḥ) walked, which Allah, glorified is He, called in His Book understanding (fiqh), wisdom (ḥikma), knowledge (ʿilm), radiance (ḍiyāʾ), light (nūr), guidance (hidāya) and right direction (rushd): it has been folded away from among people and has become utterly forgotten.

¶ 3

Since this is a breach that has struck the religion, and a pitch-dark calamity, I saw it as urgent to devote myself to writing this book: to revive the sciences of the religion, to uncover the paths of the early imams, and to make clear the glories of the beneficial sciences as the prophets and the righteous early generations held them.

¶ 4

I have built it on four quarters: the Quarter of Acts of Worship (ʿibādāt), the Quarter of Customs (ʿādāt), the Quarter of Things that Destroy (muhlikāt), and the Quarter of Things that Save (munjiyāt).

¶ 5

I have opened the whole work with the Book of Knowledge, because it is the most important of all. First, I want to show which knowledge Allah, through the tongue of His Messenger ﷺ, has made every single person worship Him by seeking, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Seeking knowledge is an obligation on every Muslim."2 In it I also separate beneficial knowledge from harmful, for he ﷺ said: "We seek refuge in Allah from knowledge that does not benefit."3 And I show how the people of this age have swerved from what is right, been deceived by the shimmer of a mirage, and contented themselves with the husk of the sciences instead of the kernel.

¶ 6

The Quarter of Acts of Worship contains ten books: the Book of Knowledge; the Book of the Foundations of Belief; the Book of the Inner Meanings (asrār) of Purification; of Prayer; of Zakah; of Fasting; of Hajj; the Book of the Etiquette of Reciting the Quran; the Book of Remembrance and Supplication; and the Book of Arranging the Litanies (awrād) through the Times of day and night.

QuranAn ayah on this page

¶2 «نسيا منسيا», "utterly forgotten": Ghazali uses the Quran's own words, from Maryam's cry. The edition does not mark it as a quote.

And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, "Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten."

Surah Maryam (19), ayah 23 · Saheeh International

Hadithal-ʿIrāqī's verdicts, and where each hadith is found
  1. 1

Reported by al-Ṭabarānī in (al-Muʿjam) al-Ṣaghīr and al-Bayhaqī in Shuʿab al-Īmān, from Abū Hurayra (RA), with a weak chain (bi-isnād ḍaʿīf).

    Nine books:

not found in the nine books, by exact wording or by key words. This fits al-ʿIrāqī's method: he goes outside the Six Books only when a hadith is not in them.

  2. 2

Reported by Ibn Mājah from Anas (RA); Aḥmad, al-Bayhaqī and others judged it weak.

    Nine books:

Sunan Ibn Majah, The Book of the Sunnah (كتاب المقدمة). The collection's English: "Seeking knowledge is a duty upon every Muslim…" (the hadith continues beyond Ghazali's quote).

  3. 3

Reported by Ibn Mājah from Jābir (RA), with a good chain (bi-isnād ḥasan).

    Nine books:

Sunan Ibn Majah, Supplication (كتاب الدعاء): «سَلُوا اللَّهَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا وَتَعَوَّذُوا بِاللَّهِ مِنْ عِلْمٍ لاَ يَنْفَعُ», "Ask Allah for beneficial knowledge and seek refuge with Allah from knowledge that is of no benefit" (the collection's English). Ghazali quotes the second half. The words «علم لا ينفع» also occur in a supplication in Sahih Muslim, The Book of Remembrance, Supplication, Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness.

ExplanationStudy notes
  • The diagnosis. People have taken the husk (qishr) of knowledge for its kernel (lubāb). Three things now pass for knowledge: legal rulings for government, debate, and preaching rhetoric. He does not condemn them outright here; he condemns reducing knowledge to them, and using them as "a net for worldly scraps".
  • The cure. The knowledge that has died is ʿilm ṭarīq al-ākhira, the knowledge of the road to the Hereafter, which he says the Quran calls by seven names. The whole Ihya is a map of that road, and the Book of Knowledge comes first because you must know which knowledge to seek.
  • The plan. Four quarters: worship, customs, things that destroy, things that save. Page 3 explains why it is arranged this way.
  • The urgency. Read the chain in ¶1 aloud: the matter is grave, the Hereafter is coming, this world is leaving, death is near, the journey long, the provision thin, the road blocked. Short sentences pile up, like a warning bell.
  • The Quran and Sunnah in his phrasing. "Utterly forgotten" is Maryam's phrase in the Quran (19:23), and "heirs of the prophets" is the wording of a hadith. Ghazali thinks in their words.
  • The hadith grades. Al-ʿIrāqī rates the three hadith on this page weak, weak, and good. Background (general knowledge, not from our sources): many scholars accepted weak hadith for encouragement and virtues, but not for rulings. When a weak hadith carries a point in the Ihya, we will say so.

GrammarSentence breakdown

Vowelled, as we read it: (Our analysis. Forms checked against the Quranic Arabic Corpus and Ibn Fāris.)

Word Root What it does Meaning
وَ joins and
الآخِرَةُ أ خ ر: "the opposite of coming first" (Ibn Fāris, vol 1 p 69) subject the Hereafter; literally "the last one", feminine of آخِر (corpus lemma, 155 times in the Quran)
مُقْبِلَةٌ ق ب ل: "one thing facing another" (Ibn Fāris, vol 5 p 51) what is said about the subject coming forward, facing us: the "doer" form (mufʿil) of أَقْبَلَ (in the Quran 9 times), made feminine to match الآخرة
وَ joins and
الدُّنْيَا د ن و: "nearness" (Ibn Fāris, vol 2 p 302) subject this world; literally "the nearer one" (corpus lemma دُنْيَا, 115 times)
مُدْبِرَةٌ د ب ر: "the end of a thing and its back, the opposite of its front" (Ibn Fāris, vol 2 p 324) what is said about the subject turning its back, going away: the "doer" form of أَدْبَرَ; مُدْبِر is in the Quran 8 times

How it works. Two sentences with no verb: Arabic does not need a word for "is". Each is a thing, then what is true of it: "the Hereafter: coming; this world: leaving." The two halves mirror each other twice: the last against the near, and the front (ق ب ل) against the back (د ب ر). Hazarvi's Urdu keeps the same picture: one coming toward us, the other turning its back.

Open questionsWhat we checked and could not settle yet
  • ¶1 «يائسا عن تمام حاجتك في الحيرة»: the words are confirmed on the printed scan, but whose "need" is meant (ḥājatika, "your need") and how the phrase attaches is not clear to us, so it is left untranslated in brackets. Hazarvi's Urdu reads it as despairing of making up for a whole wasted life. To compare with another edition when one is available.
  • «العلماء ورثة الأنبياء»: its grading has not been checked yet; we do not yet have a grading source for it.
HadithMore on the hadith

Echo, not a note: «العلماء ورثة الأنبياء», "the scholars are the heirs of the prophets" (¶1). Ghazali uses the words without calling them a hadith, and al-ʿIrāqī adds nothing here. The words occur in hadith in Sunan Abi Dawud, Knowledge (Kitab Al-Ilm), and Jami al-Tirmidhi, Chapters on Knowledge. Grading: not checked yet.
